Designing and Wondering on Tuesday and Wednesday

Dear Parents,

Parent Volunteers:  We are hoping to go on a community walk next Monday to the ponds at the bottom of Symons Valley Parkway.  We  are looking for two parent volunteers with security clearance to join us.  If you would be available to come on Monday, October 23rd fromt 8:30 to 10:30, could you please email me.  Thank you.   My email is: kehargreaves@cbe.ab.ca

Home Reading:

A reminder that home reading is done  daily with you at home and should be returned for a new book each Monday.  Literacy in all grades is important, but in grade four it is especially important that students read everyday to build their comprehension and fluency skills.  Texts in grade four become significantly more challenging as the number of high frequency words decreases and the number of academic words goes up.  Students who practice the reading powers  (visualizing, making connections, asking questions, and inferencing) are going to be thinking readers with strong strategies for understanding higher level texts.  I thank you for your support to make your child a thinking reader.  If you have any questions about home reading or the reading powers, please contact me.

Design Thinking:

We continued using the design mindsets on Tuesday by beginning the test phase of the design thinking cycle.  This phase is where we test to see if the prototype works and what adjustments need to be made.  This stage involves more ideating to problem solve and evaluate.  Students use their collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills to test the sustainability and durability of their biodegradable packaging.  Here are some photos and a video of the testing:

Math:
In Math we have been working on rounding numbers as a strategy for using friendly, benchmarks numbers to estimate using mental math.  Here is a video we watched:  https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/rounding-to-the-nearest-10

Here is another one for more explanation of why we round numbers:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd-E18EqSVk

Today everyone was excited to have their school photo taken.  Here are some photos of us getting ready for our photos to be taken:
