A Gallery of Great Thinking for Nov 27-30

Ken Taylor students have HEART   ... Check out the beautiful mosaic of values created by all of the students on our first Flex Friday last week.

Helpfulness, empathy, acceptance, responsibility and truthfulness, a great reminder for all of us to live these values each and every day.

We've been using the maker space to continue our exploration of simple machines and this week we used the keva planks to construct inclined planes.
It was fascinating to observe the design thinking mindsets in action.  The team work and global mind was sparking, people were sharing ideas and getting creative with materials to test their machines.

Check out our IXL "math club"!  Thinking Thursday was all about math on the iPads  in room 105-- using IXL math to explore decimals and fractions.  Do they look engaged to you?
Ask your child why they enjoy learning using IXL.

If you recall last Monday was International Children's Day -- we believe everyday is children's day in room 105.  We've created cards to celebrate the importance of child rights by creating emojis to represent the importance of protecting all children.  They were also asked to come up with a superpower that could help children in need all over the world.  Have a look at some of the amazing artwork:

Wondering about Multiple Perspectives and Ideating on Wednesday

Dear Parents,

Today we used the iPads to work on a new thinking tool that allows you to use logical reasoning about a situation or an event.  Here is an example of the flow chart that students will be completing to get them prepared for some essay writing on our novel Fatty Legs.   This learning task is an example of learning outcome 3.1 in our language arts program of studies:

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to manage ideas and information.

3.1 Plan and Focus
Focus attention
  • use organizational patterns of expository texts to understand ideas and information
  • focus topics appropriately for particular audiences
Determine information needs
  • ask relevant questions, and respond to questions related to particular topics
Plan to gather information
  • develop and follow a class plan for accessing and gathering ideas and information

Collaborate to communicate

Quick mastery of the app features

Mindful focus

Here are some of the webs they created with a partner  using the app Simple mind on the iPads:

This afternoon we continued our journey in the maker space working with new partners to ideate for simple machine prototypes.  The maker space allows us to create using the design mindsets.  Collaboration to ideate, testing, and redesigning.

Here is the science learner outcome we are working on:
Understandings - Topic B: Wheels & Levers
Students learn about basic components of simple machines: how they are assembled, how they operate, how they are used. Students explore different techniques that can be used to transfer motion from one component to another, using simple connectors and various levers, gears, pulleys and band driven systems. As they work with these components, they learn the functions that each can perform, including sample applications and ways that they can be used in a larger system. As part of their studies, they examine how these simple machines are used to change the speed or force of movement.

Mindful About Children's Rights on Monday

Today, we took up the challenge to take action to speak up  for child rights.  We exercised our power to speak and inform through presenting.  We danced, we spoke and we wrote persuasive pieces   in our author's notebooks.  Here are some highlights of our day for you to enjoy:
Which right do you support?

What about us?  We can change the world!

A circle of support for children's rights all over the world.  Have a listen to which rights we support.

celebrating our right to play and dance

A passionate student speaks out at our mock United Nations -- the activist children in room 105 speak out!  Will you listen?

Check out a couple of the persuasive pieces below:

World Children's Day - Monday November 20th

Here are the Rights of Every Child:

Don't forget to go into D2L to answer this week's learning task.  It is all about this very special day.
