Wondering About a Fossil Mystery & Makers in Motion in the Maker Space

Dear Parents:

Here is our learning web for the week for you to discuss at home:

Another week of  action packed with exciting learning moments.
Here we are in the maker space, we explored some mini challenges about making and breaking.  Design Thinking promotes the green thinking hat, creativity.  You are collaborating to come up with different ways to create.  Your prototypes are not permanent they can be adjusted in the moment and this was what I observed students doing.    Here is a question connected to science and world problems  for you to discuss with your child:  How does a maker space help to reduce waste in our world?

Eli and Logan were building quicker than a beaver builds her lodge.  Notice the simile.  Ask your child what a simile means.  Hint, it's a comparison of two things based on a common characteristic.  Here's a link for you to explore simile vs. metaphor further:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soP7d3e212k

We were so excited and transformed by our virtual field trip with Meghan from the Royal Tyrrell Museum.  What were the Secrets of the Lost Quarry?  Hmmm... We learned about how artefacts help us understand the movements and actions of people from the past.  It was really interesting for students to try out the tools that archeologists and palaeontologists use in the field.

Here are some photos from the field trip:

Here's a great visual for students to remember how to round numbers as a mental math strategy.  It's a rounding rap that you can practice at home:
